How to Fight the Winter Blues with Ornaments

crafts with your kids

This article by Luzerna Solon encourages us to use our hands and creativity to fill our homes with holiday decorations.  We hope she has seen our articles on making your own bread dough Christmas ornaments at home.   Be sure and look up our recipes, tools, and techniques on our blog under Make Your Own Ornaments!  It’s quite fun!

Holiday Crafts to beat Winter Storms and Gloom

A lot of people decorate their homes inside and outside during the major fall and winter time Holidays, such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. A lot of these people head to the stores every year and look for new and exciting ornaments and decorations to purchase. During the month of October, people buy rubber skeletons, thick paper cutouts of witches, black cats, pumpkins and skeletons, large inflatable yard displays of animated monsters, and pumpkins are carved into jack-o-lanterns and placed outside doors. During November, there are inflatable turkeys in yards, and smaller ones sitting on Kitchen tables, along with cornucopia displays, and windows are decorated with thick paper cutouts of pilgrims and turkeys.

December is the same way, with houses and yards filled with inflatable Santa’s, Animated Snow Globes, and life-sized reindeer and sleighs, Windows and stands are covered with garland and other decorations, door have wreaths hanging on them, and most homes have a large decorated Christmas tree, that is lighted and placed in a window for those outside to see as they pass by.

Most of these decorations have been bought in stores, and people spend a huge amount of money on them when they don’t have too at all, in fact, there are some homes that are decorated and look just as nice or better, that have been decorated with decorations that are homemade. Just about any store bought decoration, except the large inflatable lawn decorations, can be made at home, or at least you can may your own variations of them, and save yourself a lot of money.

Here are just a few ideas for you to make your own Holiday decorations; Instead of buying the thick paper cutout images of skeletons, bats, pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, turkeys, pilgrims, Santas, and others, just search the internet for clipart or holiday decorations, and you can find hundreds or thousands of these images. Just select the images you like, and print them out using plain copy paper, then you can cut them out with scissors and hang them all around your house, including the windows.

The garland comes in different colors and thicknesses, and it seems every year there are more types of it to choose from, and like everything else, each year the price increases. Did you know that most homes have three things that can be turned into some beautiful homemade garland, to decorate the Christmas tree with? The three things you need to make your own garland is; the thread of any color, a small needle and a bag of microwave popcorn. Here’s how we used to make homemade garland every year when I was a youngster. Simply pop the popcorn, but don’t add any butter or seasonings to it, in fact, it works best when you use plain popcorn, that is butter free, but any popcorn will work.

Simply, thread the needle like you do if you were sewing, and carefully pass the needle through the popped corn, then add more and more, until after a while you end up with a very long string of popcorn, that you can hang onto your Christmas tree. What is great about this is when the season is over, carefully remove the stringed popcorn from your tree, and take it outside and hang it over a fence or a tree branch, for the birds to enjoy.

Christmas ornaments can be made too, they actually sell clear glass ornaments that you can decorate, or you can buy plain, Styrofoam balls of different sizes, and make your own ornaments, you can paint, glue and sprinkle these with glitter, add ribbons, sequins and other items, fasten ornament hooks on them, and hang them onto your Christmas tree, or where ever you wish.

There is no limit to the types of Holiday items you can make at home, throughout the whole Holiday Season, from October through January, in fact, you can make them all winter, even to use the next year. Making homemade ornaments and decorations is such great fun, one person can do it, or a whole family can make them together, anyway, it’s a great way to help fight the winter blues.

There is a website that describes numerous activities and other methods to help eliminate the Winter Blues, this website is called: Winter Activities – and it may be found at this url: https://www.winter-activities.com

Bring Christmas Joy into Gift Selection

Personalized Christmas Gifts Make the Holidays Sparkle

This article by author Thomas Galvin gives us some nice insight into why a personalized ornament from www.calliopedesigns.com will make a lovely and reasonably priced gift this Christmas.

Ask any child what’s special about Christmas, and most will tell you that it’s all about the gifts. As we grow older, however, we understand that while it may be all about the gifts, it’s really all about gift-giving, not gift-receiving. But gift-giving isn’t always so easy. We get bogged down with shopping, striving to find the perfect gift without spending too much…or too little. We worry that we’ll give the “wrong” thing, will purchase something the recipient already owns, or perhaps something they’ve received from someone else.

Christmas gift giving needn’t be that stressful! Personalized Christmas gifts put the fun back into holiday shopping and help the shopper provide their friends and family members with presents that are truly unique. When you give a personalized gift, it means you spent a little extra time thinking about the ideal present for each person on your list, and unlike the gifts that come from the mall, it’s highly unlikely that this one will be duplicated.

If you’re looking for a gift that truly marks the holiday, consider a personalized Christmas ornament. These are available in a diverse variety of designs, from bells, stars, and trees, to the standard Christmas ball shape. Some include a sentiment, like “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Holidays”, or “Peace on Earth”. Others are suitable for newlyweds, proclaiming “Our First Christmas Together”. Some are also designed for “Baby’s First Christmas.” Most include room for a name or names as well as a date. Similarly, personalized Christmas signs are a fun gift and a great addition to any Christmas décor.

However, all gifts don’t have to be Christmas-specific. Just about any personalized item is suitable for Christmas or any other occasion when gift giving is expected. For those who enjoy shiny gifts, personalized jewelry is always a smart choice. Heart-shaped necklaces, pretty charm bracelets, cuff links, and pocket watches, engraved with the recipient’s initials, are lovely and are sure to thrill the recipient when they open that tiny box on Christmas morning.

Looking for something less ornamental and a little more practical? Other personalized items include picture frames, various types of wall hangings, religious gifts, sports-related items, tote and duffle bags, mugs and glasses, wine- or cigar-related items for the serious aficionado, keepsake items, and even sports knives and pocket tools.

When you choose personalized Christmas gifts for your loved ones, each item becomes uniquely theirs, featuring their name, the year of the gift, and often another special sentiment that tells them just how much you care and how happy you are that they’re part of your holiday festivities!

Christmas Ornaments for your Holiday Decorations

Camping: Male Personalized christmas Ornaments

Choose Personalized Christmas Ornaments for Your Holiday Decorations

This article by Craig Miller has some interesting points!  It makes our ornaments at www.calliopedesigns.com even more fun and useful!

Christmas is nearing once more, and one of the best ways that you can perk up your house is to use personalized Christmas ornaments. These customized decorations have the ability to make your holiday festivities a lot more thrilling and meaningful this yuletide season.

Personalized Christmas ornaments are extremely impressionable as well as enchanting to check out. They are available in many forms and designs. A few examples of best-selling merchandises are figurines, Christmas balls, stockings, toys as well as candies. They may be produced from various resources such as glass, metal, plastic, wood and the like. So no matter what type of custom décor or materials you prefer, you’re certain to locate the item you want easily because of the emergence of online ornament shops on the internet.

Customized decorations also provide a chance to make your ornaments much more essential because they typically include unique dedications, special names, and even memorable dates. You may also submit your personal design if you want a particular decoration, and your selected online shop happily produce them for you! Your family will certainly be impressed by the ornaments and the effort you’re putting into making this year’s celebrations much more extraordinary.

One more thing that’s truly incredible regarding personalized Christmas ornaments is the fact that they’re extremely inexpensive. Many people think that they’re costly because they’re custom-made, but they’re usually in the same price range (sometimes they’re even less expensive) compared to the typical décor. This will make the actual adornments much more available to consumers who would like a distinctive method of enhancing their houses this Christmastime.

To get your hands on these types of customized decorations, the first thing you need to do is actually visit a décor shop on the internet. Afterward, select the styles you want from their catalog as well as the type of personalization you would like. You may want to add names, dedications and other special messages to make the ornament more memorable. As soon as you’re certain of the details, go ahead with your order and they’ll be shipped to you quickly.

But apart from utilizing customized decorations to adorn your home, you can give them as gifts to your loved ones as well. Pick an ornament style that your recipient will enjoy and don’t forget to include a personal message. This way, your friends and family will cherish your present because you put some effort into it. Custom decorations additionally function as inexpensive giveaways for your co-workers, neighbors, organizations, and so on.

Whilst it’s definitely practical to make use of the same décor every year, there’s always the risk that your ornaments may become boring and out of style. Christmastime should be a season full of fun and excitement, that’s why it’s essential to make your yuletide decorations as attractive as possible. So instead of choosing the same, dull decorations every year, why not incorporate a new style to your home adornments? Utilizing personalized Christmas ornaments can certainly help you apply your creativeness and make your place much more appropriate for the occasion.

Now that you know just how custom ornaments can improve your holiday decorating process, you should go ahead and secure your orders while there’s still time. Your personalized Christmas ornaments are guaranteed to bring the charm you’re looking for and make your yuletide celebrations truly remarkable this year!

A Christmas Engagement? Some creative approaches!

Santa's Personalized Engagement christmas ornaments

It’s that time of year when everyone gets close to those they love. They remember what they are thankful for and think about what they want to hold on for the future. Christmas engagements are very common and in fact, most engagements actually happen around the holidays!

Some guys are clueless when it comes to proposing on Christmas, or thinking of Christmas engagement ideas. Here are a few ideas to either give you the picture perfect holiday engagement or to spark your creativity to say “Merry Christmas” in the most surprising way!

Christmas Engagement Ideas- with Ornaments Too!

Make the Ring the Ornament

A cute way to propose at Christmas is to hang the ring on the Christmas tree – like an ornament! Have the ring be the ONLY ornament on the tree when she walks in…or, hang the ring box with ribbon on the tree and point out the “interesting” new ornament. She won’t know what to think!

Visit Santa Claus

No, seriously. Go to the mall and visit Santa Claus. This could be the making of the perfect Christmas engagement! Tell her you know what she wants for Christmas…then BOOM. Drop down on one knee in front of everyone. She will have to say that Santa knew what she wanted! (Cheesy, but true!)

The Magic of Mistletoe

Everyone knows that the Christmas tradition is to kiss under the mistletoe…so why not take it a step further? Give her a quick smooch then pop the question right there – propose under the Christmas mistletoe! It is a romantic, personal, and intimate way to share the moment together.

The Bottom of the Stocking

This Christmas engagement proposal idea is pretty easy to figure out. Hide the ring box at the very bottom of her Christmas stocking. When she goes through all the candy and little things along the way, the best present yet will be waiting at the bottom – an engagement ring!

The Stroke of Midnight

Another interesting Christmas proposal idea is to ask the question when the clock strikes midnight – that moment between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You can bring in the holiday the very second it begins with your surprise Christmas engagement.

With the Family Gathered ‘Round

This Christmas engagement idea is one that you can only do if you are comfortable and on good terms with the family! If you both are super close to your families, try popping the question of marriage when the family is together to celebrate the holiday. Then everyone can celebrate together when she says, “Yes!”.

Christmas Abroad

Many people travel for the Christmas holiday. Try taking a trip to an exotic location, somewhere you both love. Whether it be the heart of Europe or the coast of Costa Rica, a creative way to propose at Christmas is to ask her when you are somewhere completely new – an adventure you are both on together! The best part will be coming back home to share the happy news.

A Romantic Evening Out

Maybe a romantic date for the two of you is a way you might be more comfortable with when proposing at Christmas. Try planning a lovey dovey romantic date night out. A carriage ride downtown, looking at the Christmas lights in the snow, dinner at a fancy restaurant under candlelight, or a home cooked meal at home with Christmas music playing in the background offer the perfect Christmas engagement setting.

Personalize It! (The Ornament, that is)

CalliopeDesigns.com has special ornaments that can be personalized with your two names, and Will You Marry Me? on the ornament.   Try putting those 4 words on a Christmas ornament!  Leave it on the tree and lead her to it. You won’t even have to talk! The ornament will speak for itself.  Or have the ornament specially gift wrapped, and put it under the tree.

Christmas Photo Album

A creative way to propose, and a perfect gift in itself, is a customized photo album with photos of the two of you. Websites like Shutterfly can create amazing Christmas photo albums that you can give to her as a gift. Make the last picture in the album a photo of the ring. Then ask away.

Ask In Bed

This is probably the most intimate way to ask that heart-stopping question. On Christmas morning, stay in bed. Keep things personal and private with each other. Asking her to marry you in bed on Christmas morning might not seem like the most creative way to propose at Christmas, but it will be a moment just the two of you can share in an environment and space the two of you only share.

Creating Lasting Holiday Memories

Penguin Family (5) Feliz Navidad personalized christmas Ornaments
As every holiday rolls around, families repeat and make new traditions. These evoke memories of years past and celebrate the years to come. The Christmas holidays are a wonderful time to make memories together, decorating the house, baking delicious cookies and seeing family and friends. If you are looking for ideas of how to make your holiday this year special and new – or to come up with some wonderful new holiday traditions, we have a couple of ideas for you to use this year!

Start a Collection, and Share It!

Decorating the Christmas tree is fun every year and as your holiday ornament collection grows, so do your memories of Christmas past. The best thing about many ornament collections is the variety of styles especially as preschoolers and young children bring home their own homemade creations to grace the tree. What really sets a Christmas tree apart isn’t its “style” or theme consistency; it is the memories and the personal touch of every family that goes into this holiday symbol.

The holidays can bring a family together, no matter how far apart you may be living or celebrating. One of the best ways to do this is through small keepsakes that mark this Christmas within your family history. There is almost no better way to mark Christmas with all the branches of your family than to give each a thematic personalized Christmas ornament.

You can choose a theme for the year – it could be “Home for the Holidays” or even simply the look of the ornament with snowmen or teddy bears. Perhaps you all met up on one place during the year and you want to send out San Francisco holiday ornaments or New Orleans holiday ornaments to commemorate the trip. Personalize each ornament with the family names and the year. You and your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and cousins can all cherish a similar keepsake that sets this year apart from any other.

Start a Holiday Outing Tradition!

One thing we have learned through the years is how many families have a wonderful time heading out to do some Christmas shopping during the holidays. This could be the trip to get your Christmas tree, enjoying mulled cider as you tag and cut your tree, or enjoying the chill of the air and the scent of pine as you sift through options on your local Christmas tree lot.

It could also be the trip to your swanky local department store to see the Christmas decorations and to buy your special keepsake for the year. Gumps in San Francisco and Fortunoff in New York are two such smaller department stores that go all out for the holidays and many local families make a Christmas pilgrimage out to find their special personalized holiday ornament or centerpiece. Through childhood milestones, graduations, engagements, weddings and the birth of new generations, these traditions mean the world to everyone and so do the keepsakes that come home marking the memory.

Mark Special Events!

If you love the idea of personalized holiday ornaments, you can also take you choice to an even more personal level, and mark any special events happening in the life of your friend, neighbor or loved one. Find just the right ornament for the newly engaged couple, the first Christmas of a new family or even welcome a new pet into their lives with an ornament that speaks to that theme.

There is no shortage of personalized ornament options out there and they really show that you care and that you are paying attention to the important events in the lives of your friends. Help them remember the year a new and important event happened in their lives through their Christmas tree. Or just choose a personalized ornament you know they’ll love.

Make Your Own Holiday Ornaments!

Engage all the members of your family in some crafty fun by having them create their own holiday ornaments. You can do this with everything from candy canes, to Fimo, to construction paper, glitter and clothespins – it just depends on how involved you want to get! Order prints from your favorite photo service and incorporate those into your holiday ornament evening.

Activities like this can also be a great opportunity for you to help your kids create gifts for family and friends that are heavy on the sentiment and light on the wallet. Remember, these don’t have to be fancy or perfect they should just be from the heart.

No matter what activities or traditions you create with your family, mark them down in some way to pass onto the next generation. Take photos, write in a journal or make a special Christmas book with your kids. These memories can never be replaced and when your grandchildren or great-grandchildren discover family history like this, it can live on for generations to come!

December Weddings: Wonderful Wedding Favors

Wedding: Male Blonde, Female Blonde Personalized christmas Ornament

We love everything about the holidays here at Calliope Designs and one of our favorite holiday events are holiday weddings!

The Perfect Gift for a Holiday Wedding Couple

What better time of year to take advantage of then one brightened by tiny Christmas lights, gold and silver decorations and beautiful, deep reds and greens. We became interested in weddings at this time of year because so many brides and mothers of brides came to us to solve their Christmas wedding favor dilemma. Our personalized wedding ornaments became the perfect centerpiece accent, wedding favor and commemorative wedding gift for many holiday brides and we’ve since developed even more perfect Christmas wedding items!

Here are some great tips from Calliope Designs on planning your Christmas wedding and some great holiday gift ideas as well!

Holiday Wedding Scheduling and Planning:
If you decide to be a holiday bride and you know where you want to have your Christmas dream wedding, make sure you book well in advance. Remember that hotels, inns, restaurants and other festive locations will be booked for holiday parties as well, so make sure you secure your Christmas wedding location as soon as possible. If you decide to have a holiday destination wedding, the same planning tips apply – and it will be especially important to give your family and guests the information about your venue, whether you choose a cruise, a ski resort or a cozy Vermont Inn.

Once you book your wedding site make sure you send out your Save the Date cards. Choose a holiday theme and send them out six to eight months in advance since people make Christmas plans very early. By sending out your save the date cards, you’ll make it possible for more people to come and celebrate with you! If you’re having a destination wedding, this is even more important and you may want to include a hotel and other information about the wedding destination to help facilitate the planning of your guests. The same early planning goes for your Christmas wedding invitations – don’t go by the usual four to six weeks prior, send them out a bit further in advance so people can plan.

Christmas Destination Weddings:
Many brides and grooms love to plan a holiday wedding at a specific location that makes the theme so much more festive. When you host a destination wedding you’ll need to plan additional parties, activities and events and Christmas is a wonderful time of year to offer themes and ideas for your events. Imagine your guests enjoying a festive sleigh ride, Christmas caroling, snowshoeing, sledding or skiing, snowball fights, and snowman making. Plan a festive cocktail reception in a fire lit, decorated room with mulled cider, eggnog and wassail!

Don’t forget, when you have a destination wedding it’s always nice to provide your guests with a thematic gift bag on arrival. Include directions and any special instructions related to the wedding and venue, a list of activities and events, restaurant recommendations and maybe even a small token to thank them for their travel, like a personalized holiday ornament related to the destination. Calliope has several festive regional ornaments that could be perfect!

Cake:
You can use a traditional wedding cake design, decorated with the same flowers you’ve used in bouquets and centerpieces. Don’t forget to look at our special personalized wedding ornaments and wedding cake toppers to add some creative flair to your cake. You can also choose a cake that has the look of a Christmas gift or a traditional Buche de Noel. Use marzipan to create sugar plums and candy holly berries like the traditional Christmas cakes.

Wedding Gown and Attendant Dresses:
When you are choosing your wedding gown, think about winter white and deep cream because either will work beautifully with the deep reds, greens, blues and purples usually associated with the holidays. Add velvet accents like a long red hooded cape or a deep green velvet sash to your dress, depending on which color scheme and flower colors you choose. If you decide on silver and white, work with a snow and ice theme choosing delicate, sparkly beading. For your attendants, look at dresses of deep red, deep green, deep purple, light or royal blue or metallic colors depending on your choice of color scheme and don’t be afraid to choose a group of colors and have your attendants in different colors. This can often ensure that you choose a color that works with their individual skin tone and it also helps them to feel like individuals.

Wedding Favors:
Choose something really special for your Christmas wedding favors, like a personalized Christmas ornament from Calliope Designs. We have a variety of styles featuring brides and grooms, Santa Claus’ and Angels and they can be personalized with the names of the bride and the groom and the date of the wedding.

Thank You Gifts:
Using personalized wedding ornaments as wedding-related thank you gifts are an especially thoughtful gesture. Choose a theme and personalize ornaments for the wedding party as small mementos for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Be sure and give both sets of parents a special ornament to remember this special day when two families come together. Make sure you also choose a special First Christmas together ornament as well to commemorate your new family in the same theme as your wedding. You can also use holiday ornaments to thank the service providers for your weddings like the caterer, the hostess or wedding planner at the venue, your bridal gown designer and your florist.

Creating Displays for your Ornament Collection

Christmas ornaments are more than just decorations, they are ways that we remember holidays spent with friends and family. We remember the people who have joined us in celebrating- that year it snowed and snowed or the one when the turkey burned, or when we finally got that two-wheel bicycle – each a memory that is cherished by families. An ornament display is a great way to show off those ornaments and to share those precious memories. There are lots of ways to display your ornaments, one of our favorites are the ornament stands and trees that let us put our favorite ornaments in the spotlight!

Creating the Perfect Display for an Ornament Collection

Individual Stands
You can display your most precious Christmas ornament on an individual stand that highlight that one (or more!) favorite piece in your collection. These stands are usually 6 or 7 inches in height and made of twisted wire or wrought iron with a curving shape that allows the ornament to safely hang without tipping or swinging. These stands come in a variety of colors and materials and some even have circular mirrors in the base that reflect the ornament. You can place several individuals stands on a mantle or table giving each their own special place in your home. Circled with candles or Christmas lights these ornaments will make festive decorations or centerpieces that will be enjoyed all season.

Ornament Trees
There are lots of ways to display your favorite Christmas ornaments, but perhaps the most popular is the ornament tree. These ornament trees come in lots of styles, sizes and even shapes so you can find something that fits your home and personal style! The smallest ornament trees are about 13 inches in height and display around eight ornaments and the largest trees stand six feet high and hold up to 90 ornaments! So, depending on the size of your ornament collection and the room you have to display them there is a tree that will suit your needs! There are trees that are simple with elegant spirals that hold each ornament at a different height, there are artificial evergreen trees that give the Christmas tree feel, even distressed tin trees for the country feel. You might use several smaller trees placed in different locations throughout the house to display separate collections or just to spread the Christmas cheer from room to room.

Hooks and Hangers
You have chosen your personalized Christmas ornaments with care and you want to show them to their best advantage. As with so many things, it’s the details that count! Chuck those old J-shaped wire hangers and treat yourself (and your ornaments) to something more elegant! These days it isn’t hard to find fancy ornament hooks and hangers at reasonable prices. You can find beautiful spiraled hangers, ones with details like stars, angels or holly leaves, and many with beautiful beads that sparkle in the light. Ornament hooks can be made of 14K gold, sterling silver, silver-plated metal, brass, copper, or painted in dozens of festive colors- the sky is the limit in finding just the right hook. You can find hooks in different lengths as well allowing you to alter the height at which your ornaments are displayed on your tree, ribbon, or ornament tree. These classy, artistic hangers will set your ornaments apart from the rest.

If you get tired of sorting out those hooks year after year you can try something new- how about a beautiful ribbon? The selection of luxurious, fun and festive ribbons is endless. Choose from organza, velvet, silk, or satin ribbons to tie your ornaments. There are loads of holiday ribbons available with prints like candy-stripes, Santa Claus, snowflakes, angels, holly leaves- your imagination is the limit! With fine ribbons, you can tie your ornaments to hooks or tree boughs while with large ribbons you can make a bow that will be an additional ‘ornament’ for your tree.

Separating Themes
Over the years many of us have collected ornaments and we love to display them at the holiday season. Finding just the right way to display them so that they get the attention that they deserve is a challenge! With a few ornament trees and some planning, you can make a beautiful Christmas display. Take a look at your collection and take out your favorites, dividing them by themes that make sense. I have a few suggestions, but you can divide them any way that you want!

Children’s Tree
This tree can hold the best of your children’s ornaments – both homemade and purchased. Still, have that glittery popsicle stick star that they made in second grade? This is the spot for that! Do you have an ornament that you bought for Baby’s First Christmas or the ballerina ornament for when she loved to dance more than anything? You can bring all these memories together and make a Children’s Tree that will show the world those beautiful, priceless ornaments. When the grandkids come over you can show them the ornament that Mom or Dad made and the one that you bought for them when they were little, too!

Family Tree
This is the perfect place to display those ornaments that represent your family. Maybe you’ve bought a personalized family ornament for each year with the family name and year, or perhaps you have an ornament for each member of the family- from Grandma and Grandpa to the newest baby, everyone can have an ornament that shows their joyful place in the family. This tree can be as big or as small as your family, if it’s just three of you then a little ornament tree will do, if it’s brothers and sisters, cousins and more then you can get a big tree! When family visits they can find ‘their’ ornament and look for everyone else’s on the tree, which is a great opportunity to swap stories and tell tales of each family member through the years. Be sure to leave some room on the tree for new family members!

Favorites Tree
The “favorites” tree is always popular! This is the spot to show off a little bit about yourself and those you love! If you collect angels, snowmen or any other theme you can place each of them on the tree bringing together the collection to share with everyone. You can make the tree a little bit about each of the family letting family members place their favorite ornaments on this tree. Does he love race cars? Does she love to garden? There are ornaments for nearly every hobby and interest. Do you collect snowmen or angel ornaments? You can display your collection on one tree each shining in their own way. Hanging your favorite Christmas ornaments from Calliope Designs on the tree lets everyone see what you love!

Wedding Centerpiece
Looking for something a little different and special as a centerpiece for your wedding? An ornament display tree with Calliope Designs ornaments for decoration or as gifts for your guests make a charming centerpiece. There are wedding ornaments with couples, most with a banner or heart that can display the names of the couple and date of the wedding as a keepsake for everyone. There are ornament trees in a variety of designs, heights, and materials that would match your wedding decor. A white filigree tree with an array of snowman and snowgirl ornaments might be perfect for a winter wedding. We have dozens of Christmas ornaments that would be perfect for a December wedding. Perhaps displayed on an evergreen Christmas tree or on a silver ornament tree- a gift your guests will remember every year when they hang it on their own family tree.

Organizing your Christmas Ornament Collection

If you have invested a lot of time, love and money in your Christmas ornament collection, you know how important proper storage is. But we all know the truth – at the end of the holiday, the last thing we want to do is create an organizational system for your ornaments, no matter how special they are. So this year, take the time ahead of the holiday to plan out and implement a better Christmas ornament storage solution for your home. We have a couple of ideas for you – see which fits your needs!

Organizing Your Christmas Ornaments

Special Containers

There are a number of specially designed Christmas ornament storage containers available in a variety of materials and sizes to fit your needs and your budget. The least expensive versions of these are made of corrugated cardboard and might be a paper file sized box with levels of dividers or sliding drawers. These boxes are effective at organizing your ornaments, but not as durable as other materials and are easily damaged by water. There are plastic containers designed especially for ornament storage and these will more effectively protect your holiday ornaments against moisture and mildew. Many of these plastic bins are red and green which makes them easy to spot among the ordinary plastic bins when the time comes to put up the tree! Similar to the cardboard boxes in design, some are large boxes with layers of dividers while others feature drawers that you can pull open. The dividers create a space for each individual ornament and keep them secure. Depending on the type of ornament, you may wish to use tissue paper, bubble wrap or cotton batting for added cushioning. These plastic bins can be safely stored on shelves or even gently stacked one on top of the other maximizing your storage space. Remember, the after holiday sales are a great place to stock up on these items.

Once you have a general storage solution for your Christmas tree ornaments you’ll want to think about how to divide and store each individual ornament. You can organize by color, or by type of ornament such as snowman ornaments, Santa ornaments, angel ornaments, favorites or whatever division makes the most sense for your collection. You can place all of one kind of ornament together so that you know exactly where to find them, or you can put a little of each kind in each individual box to allow them to have an equal mix as you open them and place the ornaments on your tree.

Now that the ornaments are in the boxes be sure to label each one. Labeling each ornament storage box as you go means that there will be an accurate description of what is inside (e.g., angel ornaments, red and gold ornaments, favorites). Even if you can see through the plastic bins, label the sides with a general description of the contents. With clear containers, you can slide a piece of paper with the list of contents inside so that it can be seen through the front or side of the box. Be sure not to label the lids if you plan to stack the bins as you won’t be able to read the descriptions!

After the holiday season is over you want to take special care when you are storing each Christmas ornament. Certainly, not every Christmas ornament you own is very delicate, but there are special considerations to keep in mind when you are packing a delicate Christmas ornament. If you have a certain holiday ornament that was particularly expensive or especially fragile you will want to take some extra care. You might want to store these ornaments separately from the more inexpensive and easily replaceable items. This box could be stored separately or could carry extra warnings on the labels such as ‘FRAGILE, FAVORITES’ to remind those retrieving the boxes to take extra care. Ideally, you will still have the original packaging for the ornament, but if not then be sure to use bubble wrap, cotton batting or shredded tissue paper to keep the item safe. Do not use newspaper as the ink can transfer to your ornament, and if possible try to find acid free tissue paper.

Storage Areas

Whenever possible you should assign a storage area for all of your holiday items, not just the ornaments, so that everything you need will be in one place. This saves lots of wear and tear when next Christmas rolls around! Christmas ornaments of all kinds should be stored in a space that isn’t damp and where the temperature stays fairly constant. Although tempting, attics don’t usually make great storage areas because the temperature and moisture levels change a great deal over the year. These changes can damage and even ruin your treasured Christmas items. Basements are a bit better as long as they aren’t too damp. Ideally, if you have the room, under the bed in the guest room or closet are great places to store your ornament boxes and other Christmas items.

Alternatives

If special ornament storage boxes aren’t convenient or practical for your family you can still organize and protect your ornaments. Make sure you wrap each Christmas ornament delicately in tissue paper or bubble wrap, do not use newsprint since the ink can rub off on your Christmas ornaments. Choose the strongest box that you can, maybe a copy paper or paper file box from work. If you have enough ornaments to fill more than one box be sure that you put the strongest, heaviest box on the bottom and lightest and most flimsy on top. Otherwise, you might have some (or all!) broken Christmas ornaments next year. For your smallest ornaments, you can put them in egg cartons and then put the egg cartons in the larger boxes. The same can be achieved with shoe boxes that can hold your most breakable items. If you still have the original boxes you can place your Christmas decorations back in the original box and then place those boxes carefully in the larger boxes. Be sure to always put the heaviest items on the bottom. Another great solution to the ornament storage problem is a spare clothing dresser or dining room buffet. You can place carefully wrapped Christmas balls and ornaments in the drawers safe and protected for next year’s festivities!

Moving On

After Christmas is the time to examine your collection and see if there are any ornaments that you don’t use. There can be lots of reasons that you no longer use or want certain Christmas ornaments, you may have downsized your tree or house or it might not be as easy to bring everything out and put it away again each Christmas season. Whatever the reason, if the ornaments are in good condition consider sharing them! Even if they aren’t in perfect condition they will be treasured by someone and enjoyed as a part of their holiday celebrations. Thematic and personalized ornaments are the most special and most sentimental and so make wonderful gifts to family and friends. Consider taking some time after the holidays to write a little history of the ornament saying where and why you bought it or if someone gave it to you as a gift. Then you can pass along the history and the ornament to someone for a birthday, Christmas or just as an after-Christmas present!

Moisture Control Extra

If you live in a humid climate you might want to increase your moisture control for your ornaments. You can use silica packs, which will absorb moisture, keeping your ornaments safer. You can usually find the silica, loose or in pre-made packs at any local craft store (particularly in the bridal area as it is used to preserve flower bouquets).

By taking just a little extra time to organize your decorations at the beginning or end of this season, you will be setting yourself up for a more enjoyable holiday season the next time around. Hopefully, you can eliminate most frustrations associated with finding and using your decorations next Christmas and can focus on having some fun with your family!

Getting Organized for the Holidays

Ornaments in a Bundle

Preparing for the holidays can be great fun, but it can also be a big headache as you try to untangle long strings of Christmas lights and sift through your Christmas ornaments. How many times have you tried to be good and save some money by buying a Christmas present early but then the season rolled around you couldn’t find it? It’s easy to do if you buy presents throughout the year, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Successful Tips for Staying Organized During the Holidays

With a little thought, a good plan and some commitment you can make next Christmas a snap! The best thing that you can do to make your life during the holidays easier is to designate a special space to organize and stage your Christmas. It doesn’t have to be a large space, but making one is the important part.

Make a Space
Finding a little room to make your own can be difficult in a busy house, but it will save you lots of time and aggravation when the holiday season rolls around. A closet in a spare room makes a great place to stage your holiday preparations. If you have more room, then great, if not, then maybe a few boxes under the bed will work just fine. The important thing is that you keep everything in one organized space and that you stick to your organizational plan. In your designated Christmas space you can put all the things you need for Christmas. Don’t just pile things in old boxes and bags, instead go ahead and invest in some ‘tools’ for your organization. They sell special boxes that store wrapping paper, keeping it from being mangled next season. You can store Christmas ornaments in ornament storage boxes that keep each ornament safe for the next year. You can store weather-resistant larger items such as lights, wreaths and displays in garages and attics. But do not store your ornaments in such places as the temperature changes and moisture will damage them.

Getting Organized
You might buy a notebook in which you can keep all of your notes about Christmas; menu ideas, Christmas card lists, gift lists, supplies that you need, etc. Once you have bought a gift for someone to make a note next to their name in the notebook to help you remember what goes to whom. This is especially useful with thematic gifts as you go through the years. Just jot down a note to yourself in a Christmas notebook you keep with all of your other supplies. An example would be if last year you chose to give everyone a Snowball Christmas scene ornament, but this year you want to give everyone a Homes and Neighbors ornament or a personalized angel ornament. By keeping track of the themes you’ve already used in prior years, you won’t risk duplication!

If you’ve got something you needed such as Christmas cards, wrapping paper or ribbon then mark it off the list so that you don’t buy it twice.

Receiving Christmas cards is one of our favorite parts of the holiday season. The cards let you stay in touch with distant friends and family and even those neighbors you just don’t see enough! In return it’s great to send out Christmas cards that reflect your family’s joy of the season. It’s a wonderful idea to buy holiday cards right after Christmas when they are on sale, then stash them away for next year. Put them in the ‘holiday’ space but make sure they aren’t all mixed in with the rest of your Christmas items because those cards will be one of the first things you go looking for next year. January is also the time to take a look through the cards you received and update your own Christmas card list. Has someone moved? Someone new send you a card? Be sure to add them to your list so that it is as up-to-date as possible. If you use a computer to keep your addresses then print out a copy of the list and store it with the cards for next year, that way if disaster strikes your computer you will at least have the hardcopy back up.

Make a list of gifts that you will need. Start by listing your family members and then adding extended family, friends, co-workers, teachers and coaches as they apply to you. As you make the list leave room for notes as you go through the holiday season. You might make a note next to each name designating an amount that you would like to spend, creating a budget framework to keep in mind as you shop through all the temptations. If you have any ideas of what you would like to get the personal note that, too, that way you can keep an eye out!

Buy a paper calendar or figure out how to use the one on your computer! Look the calendar over and set some goal dates for when you want to have things done. Maybe July, write a present list, pick a theme and start shopping. September, make final purchases. October review Christmas card list, buy canned and other dry goods for Christmas meals that can sit on the shelf for some time.

November
o Week 1: Write Christmas cards
o Week 2: Address Christmas cards
o Week 3: Buy Christmas stamps
o Week 4: Send out Christmas cards

Keep all of your receipts! If you have a file folder system, that’s great. If not a simple shoe box will do in a pinch. Anything is better than losing them or having them scattered in lots of different locations throughout the house.

Buying Gifts
Once your Christmas shopping gift list is complete, make your plan to tackle this year’s Christmas shopping. Perhaps you could pick a theme and shop for gifts all within that theme which can simplify things a great deal. An idea such as ‘spa’ means you could buy comfortable robes, relaxing teas, scented candles and even gift certificates to local beauty places to give as gifts. Personalized Christmas ornaments are another excellent theme because despite getting similar gifts for a group, they can all have that important personal touch.

If one of those single items isn’t a large enough gift, you can group them together for a larger present. Making a theme for the year’s gifts can really simplify things if you shop all year long for Christmas. It’s a great budget and time saver, but it does mean that you need some organization up front to make it work.

Shopping online can be a fun way to find the things you need at good prices. Many websites offer deals and free shipping on orders over a certain amount, so combine shopping for more than one person so that you can meet the minimums and reap the reward! Keep in mind that websites will run out of popular items just like regular stores, so shop as early as is practical. Standard shipping can also take several weeks and the holiday season is busy, so if you can shop throughout the year and store the gifts until you use them.

Storing Gifts
As you buy your Christmas presents place them in the designated Christmas area. As long as you don’t have an overly curious family you can keep everything all together. If you want to keep family gifts separate to maintain the surprise then keep only gifts for extended family and friends in the closet and hide the family gifts wherever you think them safest- just be sure to remember where they all are! If the gift was purchased with someone special in mind then place a sticky note on the gift to remind you who it is for when it comes time to wrap. If it is a general gift purchased to give to someone but not a certain individual then put it in a box for hostess gifts or general gifts. When it is time to wrap those presents for co-workers, teachers, coaches, and others you can ‘shop’ in this box for something just right.

You can also wrap your gifts as you buy them and store them wrapped (without bows). If you do, be sure to place a sticky note on it that reminds you what it is and for whom it is intended. Even if you put on a ‘To and From’ tag, there is a good chance you’ll have trouble remembering exactly what it is you bought. Save yourself the unwrapping hassle and use the sticky note!
